Mother receives 26 years jail 26 term for drowning her kids

Mother receives 26 years jail 26 term for drowning her kids

Mother who fled conflict and admitted killing three of her children and attempting to murder a fourth by driving her car into a lake was jailed for 26 years in Australia on Tuesday.

Akon Guode, who came to Australia after fleeing civil war in South Sudan, plunged the vehicle into the lake on the outskirts of Melbourne in 2015, killing one-year-old son Bol and four-year-old twins Hanger and Madit.

Rescuers pulled her and five-year-old daughter Alual from the sinking vehicle.

In handing down his sentence, Justice Lex Lasry said the 37-year-old suffered from post traumatic stress syndrome but why she had driven into the lake remained a “tragic mystery”.

“The sentence I’m about to impose is in some respects inadequate to reflect the gravity of what you’ve done, yet at the same time excessive given your mental state and your background of hardship and desperation,” he said.

Nonetheless “these are obviously grave offences”, Lasry added.

“These children trusted you as their mother as they were entitled to do. Your betrayal of that trust had catastrophic consequences whatever the true reasons were for your consequences.”

The defence told the court Guode suffered severe psychological trauma from the civil war.

Witnesses said before the tragedy Guode had complained of receiving threats from the estranged wife of the children’s father — with whom she had been having a long affair — and had isolated herself from the Sudanese community.

The mother-of-seven’s eldest daughter had previously told the court she was concerned about Guode’s driving as she had been experiencing dizzy spells for six months leading up to the deaths.

Guode, who reportedly wailed as her sentence was handed down in the Victorian Supreme Court, will spend a minimum 20 years behind bars before being eligible for parole.

Man Tells Court: I Gave My Wife N5m, Car, N100,000 Monthly Allowance To Quit Our Marriage

I Gave My Wife N5m, Car, N100,000 Monthly Allowance To Quit Our Marriage

A businessman, Augustine Anyia today urged an Agege Customary Court to dissolve his seven-year-old marriage to his wife, Nneka, due to lack of care, lesbianism and threat to his life.

Augustine, a father of two, resides at No. 11/13, Kolawole Adekunle St., Ajah, Lagos.

“My wife is quarrelsome and quick to violence, especially when she demands for money or anything and l don’t respond to on time,” he said.

The petitioner told the court that he married the respondent after six months of courtship on his return from the United States.

“There has been no peace of mind in this marriage: She is a party freak and does not have any iota of respect for me,’’ he said.

Augustine also alleged that the respondent engages in lesbianism with her friends.

“I see all sorts of pictures of naked women with my wife sent to my phone by her friends and informing me about their acts of lesbianism and asking me to stay away from her,’’ he said.

The petitioner told the court that on two different occasions, he moved out of his house due to threats to his life.

“Whenever we have any misunderstanding, she always threatens to kill me.

“The stress is unbearable; there is no longer peace of mind in this loveless marriage,” he said.

The petitioner also alleged that his wife reported him at a police station and when he was summoned, the respondent demanded to be paid off by her husband as she was fed up with the marriage.

“My wife demanded for a sum of N5 million, a car, N100,000 monthly allowance for the children and to be responsible for the children’s school fees.

“ l agreed to these and I gave her all that she requested for,’’ he said.

She moved out of the house sometimes in October 2016 and had refused me access to the children till date.

The petitioner, who described his wife as “a troublesome and mischievous person” pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage because he was no longer interested in the union.

He also prayed the court to grant him access to his two children.

The respondent was, however, not present during the proceedings in court

The court’s President, Mr Philip Williams, adjourned the case till June 22 for further hearing.

DAD RAPED ME WHEN I WAS SEVEN': Sick dad finally jailed after daughter he abused for 20 years secretly recorded him boasting sex with her was ‘best he’d ever had’

A DAUGHTER who was abused by her sick dad for 20 years has finally put him behind bars after secretly recording him boasting that sex with her was the “best he’d ever had”.

DAD RAPED ME WHEN I WAS SEVEN': Sick dad finally jailed after daughter he abused for 20 years secretly recorded him boasting sex with her was ‘best he’d ever had’
Twisted Raymond Prescott, of Clifton, Nottingham, first attacked Layla Bell, 31, when she was just seven years old and told her it was “their little secret”.

Layla, who has five older siblings, said she was his “favourite” and her “Jekyll and Hyde” dad would suddenly turn from her “best friend” to a “sexual predator”.

The 54-year-old would brazenly grope her in front of their family, and once raped her next door to his wife while screaming: “I’m having sex with my own daughter.”

When she spoke out to police in 2001, his relatives called her a “gobby bitch” and she withdrew charges and turned to drink and drugs.

But after Prescott tried to attack her one last time in December 2012, brave Layla returned with her phone on record and got him to confess to his vile crimes.

In the chilling clip, the landscape gardener tells her over a cigarette: “I can’t have sex with anyone else and enjoy it, so I want to have sex with you.”

Mum-of-four Layla handed the film to Nottinghamshire Police in February 2013 and the force launched an investigation.

Prescott denied the charges, but was jailed at Nottingham Crown Court for 12 years in May last year.

Bravely waiving her right to anonymity to speak out, Layla said: “When I was younger I was always the favourite of my dad.

“The very first time he did it I was seven.

“He said he was proud of me for not wetting the bed and told me I was going to get a present.

“He took me into the bedroom after everyone else had gone to school and laid me down on the floor.

He ran his hands up me and took my skirt off, but I can’t fully recall what happened next.

“I blocked it out of my head because it happened at such a young age, but I knew it was very bad.

“It began to happen again after that, but it wasn’t a regular thing.”

In the recording, Prescott can be heard telling Layla: “I had this plan. If I got back with Mum, I get closer to you.

“It’s sick, I know it is, it’s sick.”

As Layla tries to leave, Prescott gets up and appears to lunge towards her.

Layla then says: “No Dad, no. Bed time, come on. Give me my bag back. I thought you were trying to call someone then.”

Prescott says: “What like Jimmy Savile? How the hell am I meant to find any females around here.”

Layla then leaves Prescott in his bed and walks out of the property, but she did not hand the footage to police until February 2013.

She said: “I kept it to myself, I was drinking heavily. I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

“When I finally did he was never arrested until his trial (on May 18) last year.

“Even though I had the recording he still made me go through the trial.”

The victim was living with her stepmother after her parents divorced.

Gbemiga Adaramola, the state director of public prosecution, told the court that the victim left the house due to alleged maltreatment by her stepmother.

Four men who gang-raped woman on bus will be hanged in Singapore

Four men who gang-raped woman on bus will be hanged in Singapore

The attackers were sentenced to death in 2013 by the trial court while the fifth hanged himself in prison during the original seven-month case.

The verdict was upheld by the high court in 2014 but the attackers – Vinay Sharma, Akshay Kumar Thakur, Pawan Gupta, and Mukesh Singh – appealed to the Supreme Court.
Today their sentences were upheld and they now face execution.

Applause broke out in court among relatives of the victim, whose identity is protected by law, as judges explained the crime met the ‘rarest of the rare’ standard required to justify capital punishment in India.

Justice R Banumathi said: ‘It’s a barbaric crime and it has shaken the society’s conscience.’

The five men and a teenager lured the 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist and her male friend onto a bus in New Delhi on December 16, 2012, before repeatedly raping the woman and beating both with a metal bar and dumping them on a road.

The woman died of internal injuries nearly two weeks later in a Singapore

Speaking outside the court, the victim’s mother said: ‘I am very satisfied. Today I am happy.’
Her father said: ‘It’s not just a victory for my family, it’s a victory for each and every woman in our country.’

The crime sparked large-scale protests and led thousands of women across India to break their silence over sexual violence that often goes unreported.

It also shone a spotlight on what women’s groups call a rape epidemic in the country.
In 2015, police registered more than 34,000 rape complaints and 84,000 women filed sexual harassment cases, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

Authorities have stiffened penalties against sex crimes, introduced fast-track trials in rape cases and made stalking a crime.

A.P. Singh, a lawyer representing three of the condemned men, said justice had not been done. He vowed to file a review petition to the chief justice of the Supreme Court.

Court jails man seven years for raping 12-year-old girl

Justice Maruf Adegbola of an Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, on Friday, sentenced one Gafar Asimiyu to seven years in prison for raping a 12-year-old girl.

Adegbola said evidence before him showed that the accused was guilty of the charge of rape preferred against him.

“The medical report from Adeoyo Hospital indicated that there was forceful penetration in the private part of the victim,’’ he said.

He also said the statement of the accused did not contradict that of the victim, adding that it helped to strengthen the case against him.

The judge further said the testimony of the accused in the court was an afterthought.

“The earlier statement made by the accused with the investigating police officer indicated that the accused had sexual intercourse with the victim without her consent.

“The prosecution was able to prove the case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.”

Adegbola said though Section 259 of the Criminal Code of Oyo State provides a life sentence for offenders; he sentenced Asimiyu to seven years imprisonment.

“Base on the plea made by counsel to the accused, the court hereby sentence Asimiyu to seven years imprisonment.’’

The judge said that the sentence should start from May 5.

The prosecutor, Mr Olayiwola Oloso, had told the court that the accused committed the crime on Feb.18, 2013 in Yemetu area of Ibadan. (NAN)

Court jailed Unrepentant Thief for 7 Years

unrepented thief

An unrepentant church thief, Williams Okonoboh Eromosele, 28 has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment with hard labour by an Igbosere magistrate court, Lagos for stealing a Huawei G73 phone valued at N70,000 from Mrs. Ihindinibu Omawunmi at the Church of Resurrection Anglican located at 1004 estate, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The convict was sentenced by magistrate Mrs. O. Otitoju after the convict pleaded guilty to the one-count charge preferred against him by the police at the Bar Beach division, Victoria Island, Lagos and the facts of the case presented by the police prosecutor, Inspector Okete Ejima.

The police at the bar Beach division, alleged that the convict had earlier been arrested in 2016 for stealing money from church offering box at a church on Musa Yar, Adua street, Victoria Island, Lagos and was charged to court. He pleaded guilty to the crime and was jailed for six months.

The Police alleged further that the convict committed the latest crime on 11 December, 2016 when he went to the Church of Resurrection Anglican at 1004 estate, Victoria Island, Lagos to attend their service. Police claimed that while the church members were praying, the convict cleverly stole the complainant’s phone and escaped.

Police stated that when the complainant observed that her phone was missing, she used another phone to call the number of her missing handset but the convict received the call and told the complainant she must pay him N10,000 before he will return the phone to her.

The complainant reported the matter to the DPO in charge of bar beach division, Victoria Island, CSP Olusegun Ajamulaya, and he advised the complainant to play along and pay the money as bait into the account the convict provided.

The convict was arrested when he went to the bank to withdraw the money. During interrogation at the station, the convict confessed to the crime and said “When I came to Lagos, I could not secure any job with my OND certificate in accountancy.

I went to a church on Musa Yar’ Adua street on Victoria Island to steal from church offering box and I was
arrested, charged to court and jailed for six months.

When I came back, the devil pushed me again to the church of resurrection Anglican, 1004 estate, Victoria Island to steal handset and I was arrested again.

The police would not have been able to arrest me the second time if I had not foolishly released my bank account to the complainant due to greed.

I supposed not to release my account since I have already made up my mind to sell the phone which I later sold for N25,000 at computer village, Ikeja.”

I her ruling magistrate Otitoju sentenced the convict to 7 years imprisonment with hard labour without an option of fine.
